Discover India 2019 Fun Way to Know Indian Culture

Many of you who live or have lived in the valley previously are probably familiar with the mega event called ‘Discover India’ – a colorful festival celebrating Indian culture. Credit goes to the India Association of Phoenix, IAP (iaphx.org) who organized this event for the past 18 years. This year’s main event, themed Flavors of India, took place on Saturday, November 9 in Scottsdale Civic Center, with some activities occurring on Friday evening, November 8. 

The guest of honor, Scottsdale Mayor, W.J. “Jim” Lane, and Mrs. Lane attended and enjoyed the event. The organizer greatly appreciated their support and attendance. The event was welcoming, multi-faceted and fun-filled for anyone visiting the outdoor facility with no entrance or parking fees. 

I asked the President of IAP, Babu Raman, what inspired IAP to organize such a big event. He explained, the sole purpose of the event is aimed at civic engagement and inclusion, and an invitation sent to all to learn about the Indian community and culture. IAP brings value to the table.  This has now turned into a very large event, and the crowd this year was probably much larger than any previous year. This validates that the efforts are worthwhile.    

What was unique in this year’s festival? Beyond cultural activities, IAP added technology, and focused on broader marketing.   They provided a platform to partners like census, health awareness, and brought in multiple dignitaries including many non-Indian organizations. The event was not limited to one day only; rather it began on Friday evening.

The main event took place on the stage showcasing performances based on culture in different states of India. Dance, music, dress show and other activities filled the hearts of the audience. Classical, contemporary, Bollywood style, you name it. Everyone enjoyed the cultural programs.

Several booths displaying Indian traditional items depicting various cultures were on sale. Needless to mention that any such day-long event isn’t complete without mouthwatering Indian food items. 

What kind of feedback have you received so far? The event was outdoor in the public eye, with appreciation pouring in from all corners – including participants, vendors, business owners, community members, in short everybody.

If you were unable to attend this year’s Discover India, simply speaking, it was a huge dhamaka with a very positive vibe. You don’t want to miss it next year.
